15-MINUTE LESSON PLAN: 19th MAY MEMORY GAME
Topic: Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day Vocabulary
Duration: 15 Minutes
Level: Adaptable for All Levels (A1 to B2+)
Materials: Printed Memory Game Worksheet, Colored Construction Paper (Fon Kartonu), Glue, Scissors
💡 TEACHER'S TIP (PREPARATION)
Before cutting the game cards, ask students to glue a piece of colored construction paper to the back of the printed A4 sheet. This prevents the pictures and words from showing through the back of the paper during the memory game, ensuring fair, fun, and high-quality gameplay!
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Identify and pronounce 8 key English words related to 19th May.
Match English historical and cultural terms with their correct visual descriptions.
Practice team-building and memory skills through interactive play.
LESSON PROCEDURE (15 MINUTES)
1. Warm-up & Word Introduction (3 Minutes)
Show the printed worksheet to the class.
Point to the pictures and introduce the key vocabulary words aloud: Atatürk, SS Bandırma, independence, youth, flag, celebration, dance, poem.
Have students repeat the words after you to practice correct pronunciation.
2. Crafting & Prep (4 Minutes)
Instruct students to glue their worksheet onto the colored construction paper first to block the light.
Once the glue is set, students quickly cut along the dashed lines to create their 16 game cards (8 words, 8 images).
3. Memory Game Practice (6 Minutes)
Students play in pairs. They mix the cards and lay them face down on the desk (colored backing facing up).
Players take turns flipping two cards. If a word matches the correct picture (e.g., "SS Bandırma" text and the ship drawing), they keep the pair. The student with the most pairs wins.
4. Wrap-up & Review (2 Minutes)
Call out random words from the game and ask the whole class to perform a quick action or shout what the image was.
Conclude by reading the bottom banner together aloud: "Remember our history. Celebrate 19th May!"
🚀 ADAPTABILITY FOR ALL LEVELS
You can easily adapt this activity depending on your classroom's English level:
For Beginners (A1): Focus purely on simple word-picture recognition and loud, clear pronunciation when a card is flipped.
For Intermediate Learners (A2-B1): When a student makes a successful match, they must use that word in a complete sentence to keep the pair (e.g., "The Turkish flag has a crescent and a star.").
For Advanced Learners (B2+): After the game finishes, students must pick 2 or 3 cards they won and use them to give a short, 1-minute speech about the historical significance of May 19th.
